07/27/19: The Families of the Nash County EYFP presented their first Community Event on Saturday, July 27, 2019. The group partnered with the Joy Community Development Corporation, also known as “Greater Joy, ” which is a nonprofit organization committed to improving the lives of the citizens of Nash, Edgecombe, Halifax Counties, and the surrounding areas. Over the past ten years, JCDC and its partners have provided thousands of residents of the City of Rocky Mount community and surrounding areas with free access to health care screenings, dental care screenings, clothing, and food during the annual Community for Unity Festival.
The event also provided a free over the counter medicine giveaway and health fair. This made for an ideal partnership. As presenters at the event, the families were able to share information about the EYFP program, their experience as participants, and most importantly, provide outreach about opioid use and prevention in Nash County. The group played Jeopardy and Bingo with those who visited the booth. They provided info packets with information about teen opioid use of e-cig’s, heroin, marijuana, steroids, tobacco, and a dangerous drug interaction flyer. A Nash County community resource flyer was also shared along with recruitment information for the next cohort.
The games played at our booth were a hit for the event. The group was able to engage the public in a fun way while sharing important information about prevention. Participants shared that they had learned a lot of things that they were not aware of. Children enjoyed playing bingo while the parents had the opportunity to speak to family members about their experience in the program and the effects of the Opioid epidemic on Nash County.
This was the first of many events planned for the community. This group would like to reach as many in the community as possible. We can’t wait to do this again.
