09/09/19 SFP Week 1: This was the first session of the SFP curriculum. For the youth activity, the girls created treasure maps which focused on their future and goals. They really enjoyed making their treasure maps, one youth comparing them to “vision boards”. They had to look for things to add to their boards from all sorts of clippings from magazines. One youth wanted to be a veterinarian and therefore was looking for pictures with animals to place on her map. The other stated she would like to be a cosmetologist. She had to look for styling products and pictures of hair.
During this activity, the youth learned quite a bit about each other and found they had a number of things in common. For instance, they both were trying to find a picture of someone helping others as they said that they both like helping people. They both also liked sports. Even as they started to run out of room on the paper, they wanted to continue adding more things to their map. At the end, the girls wanted to share the maps again later in the class cycle, stating that they helped them see that “Anything is possible.”
