03/03/20 Week 5: For Session 5 of SFP 10-14, parents learned about the value of good listening. We discussed ways parents can listen more intently for the feelings of their youth. We also talked about the basis of misbehavior. Four key needs that all people have are belonging, enjoyment, power, and independence.
Parents discussed ways for their youths to fulfill all of those needs in a positive way. For example, the belonging need can be satisfied by joining 4-H or another positive club. The adverse decision to make when it comes to belonging would be to join a gang. The parents discussed ways they could help their youth get involved in more community-based things that will lessen giving into negative temptations.
In the youth session, the children learned that drugs and alcohol can hurt them. They also practiced skills for resisting peer pressure.
In the family session, the families learned to solve problems together. One parent said, “My child initiated a family meeting this past week. I was so proud of her.” We were also blessed by the presence of Anne Greenaway and Kenan Bridges.
