10/07/19 PFPC Week 1: This week we began the pilot curriculum of Powerful Families, Powerful Communities. We had two families participate in our first session. The youth had fun thinking back to who they were in the past, and comparing that to who they are today. They were able to put their thoughts on paper by using text or illustrations.
The caregivers also focused on youth development, as well as interacting positively with those in the home. They practiced using the 5:1 ratio developed by Dr. John Gottman. This practice states that for every one negative interaction, there should be at least five positive interactions.
During the family session, everyone focused on how they work together as a team and each family developed their own “motto”. It was great to see our families interacting and having fun with one another when they came back together for the family session.
