07/14/20: This week I was able to spend time talking with some of our families about what’s been going on. For the most part, a lot of us are still adjusting and figuring out ways to move safely during our “new normal.” Though parents are trying to find new meal ideas and ways to make engagement fun, our youth are “social distancing” to another degree. They have been out of school since March, where most have last seen their friends. Some may have had the opportunity to video call, but it is not the same as face-to-face interaction. To them, social distancing is more than staying 6ft apart…its not being able to hang out with their friends, hug, laugh hysterically in the hallway, or do anything that involves being in close proximity.
Parents, if you have youth that are struggling with social distancing, help them find ways to connect with their friends that give them a sense of hope and belonging.
Youth, it is okay to feel the way you feel. One day, hopefully sooner than we think, we will be able to embrace one another and be with our friends and family.
