10/31/20: The Empowering Youth and Families Program aims to promote individual resilience in and effort to encourage stronger families for healthier communities. In the fall of 2019, three families successfully completed the program in New Hanover County. These families attended confluence weekend at the end of 2019 and began planning a community event geared towards drug use prevention.
While COVID-19 safety precautions have placed a halt on the large community event planning for the moment, one New Hanover County EYFP family has not stopped putting in a continuous effort to provide drug prevention education and safe activities for the individuals of the Hillcrest Community to engage in. On Halloween 2020, this family organized and gathered donations for a Halloween event in their neighborhood. They followed COVID-19 safety guidelines and handed out drug use prevention education flyers along with candy and pizza on the evening of Halloween, allowing not only for the members of their community to gain important knowledge about the effects of drug use but also a time for safe community engagement instead of potentially negative activities.
This family demonstrates the lessons they learned from the Empowering Youth and Families Program in their daily lives and continue to show excitement in sharing prevention information with the community. Way to go EYFP – Hillcrest!
