4/13/21: Onslow County EYFP held Session A of Powerful Families tonight. The youth started the evening by playing the “Candy Game.” In this game, they were able to share some of their favorite things to do and eat. It allowed them to get to know each other better. After going over our expectations for the semester, the youth talked about how much they have changed since elementary school. Some youth expressed they had gotten taller and smarter since then. Mr. John and Ms. Sophia, the facilitators of the session, went over how much growth is important at the middle school stage of their lives.
In the caregiver session, the participants got off to a great start by introducing themselves and stating their expectations for the semester. Caregivers learned through the “Retelling the Story” lesson how reacting positively to negative behavior can change entirely how the day goes, for both the caregiver and their youth. Caregivers discussed what things their youth do that make them happy and what their youth do that make them frustrated. I can honestly say that the youth we have in the program are a great group. The caregivers expressed that there is not much their youth do that upsets them. They are well-behaved, and it shows in their interactions during EYFP. I look forward to working more with them in this Spring 2021 Cohort!
