4/27/21: For Session C of Powerful Families, the youth started with playing a game of Quarantine Bingo. After that, Mr. John and Ms. Sophia facilitated the session teaching the youth the difference between a safe choice and a risky choice. Following that exercise, the youth got to exercise their brains in the “Solve me!” activity where they used a calculator, dictionary, ruler, and scissors to complete their tasks.
Youth also used their Safe Choices tool cards to learn how to effectively deal with peer pressure and brought up how the tool cards will help them deal with peer pressure in the future. This is one of my favorite skills to facilitate for the youth.
In the caregiver session, the caregivers started off the session by playing Quarantine Bingo as the youth did. They watched a video on Emotion Coaching and learned each of the steps to that strategy. Mr. Lee and Mr. Armando did role-play scenarios with the parents to practice the Emotion Coaching technique. Some of the other topics explored in the caregiver session were that behavior is a form of communication, what is positive discipline, and setting guidelines for consequences. We facilitated to parents how important it is to lead by example because our youth watch everything we do and how we act.
