5/18/21: Session 1 of Powerful Communities kicked off with the youth playing the “Please May I” game. This game involves listening and following directions. Youth talked about goals in this session, how they pick certain goals, and try to reach them.
In the caregiver session, the focus was on opioids. We talked about what the words “addiction”, “addict”, “drugs”, and “abuse” mean. Facilitators played videos on the history of opioids and how opioids affect our nation. Caregivers were surprised to learn that opioids have been around for quite a while. One parent said, “I never knew opioids have been around that long!”
We also talked about how the opioid crisis affects Onslow County. To conclude, the caregivers and facilitators discussed what community support agencies can help with the ongoing opioid crisis in Onslow County.
