We wrapped up our Powerful Communities sessions this week (12-16-2019).
Our session was powerful because of the panel guests that joined us. The panel consisted of two sisters who had high ACE scores based on their childhood experiences. They had experienced substance abuse in the home, neglect, foster care, and more. They were both open and honest about how they had dealt with the events from their childhood and how the decisions they made impacted their lives.
This open forum was valuable for our group because they had experienced many of the same things as the sisters and were able to ask questions and get advice about how to move on with things that happened in the past.
After the panel discussion, the families reflected on something they had overcome and how they were successful at doing so.
We celebrated the end of our sessions with cookie cake and ice cream!
Watching this family interact during our last session was amazing. When they first joined our program, they struggled to find a way to talk to one another. By the end, they were using communication skills that they had learned throughout the sessions and could talk to one another with ease. They were able to comfort one another and laugh together. The growth they experienced was powerful.
