11/19/20: Last week we were unable to meet, so we rejoined this week for Powerful Families session 3. The main focus of our lesson was choices, more specifically, safe choices and risky choices. We worked with the youth on practicing their “NO’s”, and had them pretend they were saying no to one of their siblings when they were trying to get into their stuff. When we asked why we needed to know safe and risky behaviors, the youth responded by saying, “so we don’t make a mistake, and if we do, so we don’t make it again.” As we continued working on saying no, we walked the youth through the safe choice tools and the scenario of a friend pressuring them.

In our caregiver session we reviewed the concept of reflexive listening and introduced emotion coaching. The main takeaway from our caregiver session was any type of behavior is a form of communication. It’s our job to pay attention to the behaviors and interpret what the youth are trying to say.

The family received all the ingredients needed to create some delicious beef tacos using an EFNEP recipe. They were also excited to get a new game this week!
